New Year, Same Me? Reflections and Lessons from 2024
As the calendar flips to a new year, I find myself echoing a sentiment that many of us share: Good riddance, 2024! It’s a relief to bid farewell to a year that tested me both personally and professionally. But as the old adage reminds us, “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side”—though I’m holding out hope that 2025 proves to be the exception.
Looking back, 2024 was undeniably challenging, yet it was also a year of growth and valuable lessons. Here’s what it taught me:
- Sometimes, exercising emotional intelligence goes out the door.
This year, I faced one of the hardest professional transitions of my life. Despite excelling in my role and “kicking ass,” I found myself replaced by a colleague who, rather than celebrating collaboration, schemed behind my back. My abilities outshined her limited capabilities, and instead of being supported, I was forced out. Even my boss, who once encouraged me to “keep shining and doing you,” chose self-preservation over fighting for me to stay—because doing so meant securing his own pay raise and job security. It was a brutal reminder that not everyone will have your back, even when they praise your work. Looking back, I could have handled receiving the news with more grace, but the sting of betrayal was overwhelming—especially when it felt like everyone else knew before I did. It’s hard to stay composed when trust is broken, and you’re blindsided by the actions of those you thought had your back. - Don’t shrink your greatness to fit into places you no longer belong.
This experience taught me a critical truth: not every space deserves your brilliance. Holding back who you are to make others feel comfortable or to fit into a toxic environment is never worth it. It’s okay to outgrow roles, relationships, or places that no longer align with your values or aspirations. Moving on isn’t just necessary—it’s liberating. - When the tough gets going, get moving. Inhale your confidence. Exhale your doubt.
If there’s one thing 2024 reinforced, it’s the importance of resilience. In the face of uncertainty and challenges, I had to remind myself to breathe—to inhale the confidence I’ve built over years of hard work and exhale the self-doubt that creeps in during tough times. Progress isn’t always easy or linear but moving forward with purpose and belief in yourself makes all the difference. Confidence doesn’t just open doors; it builds the courage to walk through them. - When the tough gets going, move your body, move your mind.
Exercise became my saving grace during moments of stress and anxiety, and for that, I must thank Peloton. The rides, classes, and community provided not just a physical outlet but a mental reset that I desperately needed. It’s done wonders for my mood, helped me refocus, and brought purpose to my daily routine. Committing 30–60 minutes a day to moving my body has transformed how I approach challenges—reminding me that even in the hardest moments, there’s always something I can accomplish. Taking care of yourself is not just self-care; it’s essential.
Closing Thoughts: A Hopeful Start to 2025
Finally, as I leave 2024 behind, I’m taking these hard-earned lessons with me into the new year. While it wasn’t an easy road, every challenge shaped me into someone stronger, more self-aware, and more resilient. Sometimes, life forces us to confront uncomfortable truths, let go of what no longer serves us, and embrace new opportunities—even when they’re disguised as setbacks.
2025 feels like a blank page, waiting to be filled with possibilities. I don’t expect perfection, but I do intend to move forward with purpose, clarity, and an unwavering belief in my own worth. After all, every ending is a chance for a new beginning. Here’s to growing, healing, and thriving in 2025—no matter what it throws our way.
